An air compressor aftercooler is a key unit in a compressed air system. It cools high-temperature compressed air and removes condensed water, preventing moisture buildup in pipelines and supporting compressed air quality and system stability.
1. Core Functions
Temperature control
Compressed air can exceed 180°C after compression. The aftercooler typically reduces outlet temperature to below 40°C, usually about 10°C above the cooling medium, to protect downstream equipment such as dryers and air receivers.
Moisture separation
As air cools, vapor condenses into liquid water. With a built-in separator and automatic drain, up to about 70% of moisture can be removed to reduce corrosion and pneumatic tool failure risk.
Oil mist reduction
In oil-lubricated compressors, part of the oil vapor is condensed and removed, helping lower oil carryover and improve compressed air cleanliness.
2. Types and Structure
Water-Cooled Aftercooler
Principle: cooling water and compressed air exchange heat in counterflow, delivering high efficiency for high-flow duty.
Structure: commonly double-tube-pass and single-shell-pass vertical design; copper tubes (for example, φ14×1 mm) are often TIG welded, with baffles to improve heat transfer.
Advantages and use: high overall heat transfer coefficient, lower heat transfer area demand, suitable for large industrial systems such as metallurgy and chemical plants.
Air-Cooled Aftercooler
Principle: a fan drives ambient air through cooling fins for heat dissipation, suitable where cooling water is unavailable.
Structure: aluminum block elements or helical baffle structure to improve airflow-side cooling performance.
Advantages and use: no cooling water required, easy installation, lower maintenance cost, common for small or mobile compressor units.
3. Technical Features
- High-efficiency retrofit: helical baffles with finned tubes can improve cooling efficiency by about 25% to 55%, while reducing pressure drop and energy use.
- Durable materials: stainless steel or anti-corrosion treated materials improve service life in humid or corrosive environments.
- Automatic drainage: a normally open auto-drain closes when air pressure exceeds 0.15 MPa to reduce compressed air leakage.
- Low energy penalty: pressure loss is minimal and generally does not add significant operating power cost.
4. Installation and Maintenance
Installation Requirements
- Install close to the compressor with enough maintenance access and a bypass line.
- Avoid direct sun, rain, high humidity above 85%, or corrosive gas exposure.
- Do not route drain lines upward or with sharp folds to prevent condensate accumulation.
Maintenance Points
- Clean ventilation openings monthly to prevent fin blockage by dust.
- Check auto-drain function and confirm drainage at least once per day.
- Monitor refrigerant pressure where applicable to detect leakage or cooling capacity changes.
- Keep ambient temperature below 40°C; poor ventilation may trigger protection shutdown.

Stabilize power first, then introduce compressed air. After shutdown, wait at least 3 minutes before restart.
